Transfer from the hotel to km 82, where we will meet the porters and equipment. We start our walk escorted by the porters, crossing a semi arid terrain along the Urubamba River, with magnificent views of the snow-capped mountains, until we reach Llactapata.

Here we will leave the Urubamba valley and follow the Kusichaca river to our first camp in Huayllabamba (approximately 3000 meters above sea level).

Food: Lunch and Dinner

Distance: Km 82 to Huayllabamba: 11 km

Duration: 6 -7 hours approximately

After having our breakfast we begin our ascent to the pass of Warmiwayñusca, a Quechua word that means, The Dead Woman (4200m.s.n.m approximately).

After a short period, we will reach the top of the pass. From this point it is possible to appreciate the path that leads to the ruins of Runkurakay.

At the end of the gorge, we will stop at a place called Pacaymayo (3600 m.a.s.l.), our second camp. (Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner) Food: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Distance: Huayllabamba-Pacaymayo: 7km Duration: 7 – 8 hours approximately.

We leave Pacaymayo and a zigzagging but short climb will take us to the circular ruins of Runkurakay. There are no signs of life in this place, only wide forests and steep hills. After a good rest, we will begin the descent along an Inca Trail that is very well preserved in this section.

We will reach the stairs that lead to the ruins of Sayacmarca (approximately 3620 m.a.s.l.).

From Sayacmarca, the stone path enters the jungle, continuing our walk towards the ruins of Phuyupatamarca.

The road crosses the Dry Lake and for a brief moment we will go up and down, and then cross El Túnel, a natural cavity produced by a land displacement, but adapted by the Incas. The Inca Trail and its well-defined edges continue through the moss-covered hills. After crossing a small pass, we will see some steep stairs and below these the Ceremonial Center of the ruins of Phuyupatamarca (3,650 m.a.s.l. approximately). Going down the road we will be able to appreciate the Urubamba valley and the river of the same name.

The road goes down to the Wiñay Wayna ruins (approximately 2650 m.a.s.l.), the most important after Machu Picchu and this will be our last camp. (Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner) Distance: Pacaymayo – Phuyupatamarca 7 km. Duration: 6 hours approximately. Distance: Phuyupatamarca – Wiñaywayna: 4 Km Duration: 3 hours approximately.

We leave our camp early in the morning and head towards Inti Punku or Puerta del Sol (approximately 2740 masl), the last step. From this point Machu Picchu (approximately 2450 m.a.s.l.) seems unreal and wonderful. We have the rest of the day to visit and explore the citadel.

The train back to Cusco leaves from the Aguas Calientes station. Arrival in Cusco and transfer to the hotel. 5 hours of walking. Distance: Winaywayna – Machu Picchu: 5 km

Duration: approximately 4 hours Distance: Phuyupatamarca – Machu Picchu: 9 km Duration: approximately 7 hours.
